Banana Beach is located in the south
west of Skiathos in the area known as Koukounaries, close
to the last bus stop and about 30 minutes from Skiathos Town.
It is actually a collection of three small beaches
where naturism is allowed and has been a favourite retreat
for naturists from all over Europe for many years and it
is the only area where nudism is permitted on the island.
The character of the beach has developed over the years.
It used to be difficult to get to and therefore only a handful
of dedicated people would make the effort. After the (now
derelict) Xenia Hotel was built at the end of Koukounaries
Bay the beach began to become more popular with the 'International
Set' as a hidden retreat where they could bathe naked and
enjoy the warm waters of the Aegean without fear of being
discovered by people who would rather wear their clothes to swim.
Today it has become very popular and the people visiting
Banana Beach tend to fall into three categories that match
the three beaches that collectively make up Banana Beach. |
For instance, there is Big Banana.
This is the main beach and where the vast majority of visitors
hang out. Nudism is permitted on Big Banana but it tends
to attract mainly non-naturists. However there are brave
folks who dare to take off their tops and bottoms mixed in
with them that don't. There are sun-beds (too many some would
say) and cantinas for that all important chilled beer when
the sun gets too hot.
Secondly, there is the small beach to the extreme left
of Big Banana. This is mainly frequented by naturists and
is virtually 100% nude. Again there are sun-beds and umbrellas
for hire but no cantina. This is not a problem though as
the cantinas on the main beach are only a hop away.
Finally there is Little Banana or Small Banana.
This beach is to the right of Big Banana and over a rocky
headland. The beach tends to be 95% - 100% nude with sun-beds,
umbrellas and a small cantina serving simple food.
All three are renowned for their outstanding natural beauty
and are unique and beyond comparison with any other beach in Greece.. |
